Tomorrow is the 25th anniversary of German reunification! Whilst the Berlin Wall fell 25 years ago last year, it took a little longer for the two halves of Germany to come back together again.
As a foreigner you might be asking 'what does this mean for me?' Well, this anniversary won't have quite the same fanfare as the Berlin Wall anniversary last year–where the 'Lichtgrenze' (the wall of lights) stretched for miles through Berlin following the line of where the Berlin Wall had once stood. Now that was a party. It is a public holiday but alas, this year, unless you do weekend work, you will miss out on actually having a day off as it falls on a Saturday. Where in the UK you will always get the Monday off as a bank holiday, here if the holiday falls on the weekend then, well, it's just tough luck.
If you want to celebrate the reunification of Germany you can head down to Brandenburg Gate and soak up the atmosphere at their street festival. Not interested in hanging out with the tourists and just want to go about your own business? Well, you might not be able to. As it's a public holiday most of the shops will be closed. Better get your weekend food shopping in today!
